Yoga Martial Arts: Our Philosophy, Our Purpose
By Sensei Nalin Sri Bandara, Founder, President & Chief Instructor, Nalin Dojo
My vision for Nalin Dojo is to help people develop strength with awareness, confidence with humility, and discipline with compassion. Yoga Martial Arts is the expression of that vision.
By bringing together yoga and martial arts, we create a practice that connects physical effort with thoughtful action. We train the body while paying attention to the person we are becoming.
One Practice, a Shared Purpose
Yoga and martial arts have distinct traditions. At Nalin Dojo, we respect those foundations while exploring how their practices can complement one another.
Yoga encourages us to observe our breathing, develop body awareness, and approach movement with patience. Kyokushin Karate demands commitment, technical precision, courage, and perseverance. Together, they give our students opportunities to practise both calm attention and decisive action.
Our purpose is to help students understand how to use their strength, when to act, and how to remain composed under pressure.
Strength Begins with Responsibility
As a founder and instructor, I believe that teaching physical skills carries a responsibility. Every technique must be accompanied by respect. Every opportunity to develop power must also be an opportunity to practise control.
In our dojo, progress includes how students treat their training partners, respond to correction, and conduct themselves when a task becomes difficult.
A strong practitioner can work hard without losing consideration for others. A confident practitioner can recognise that there is still more to learn.
These are qualities we want our students to carry into their families, schools, workplaces, and communities.
Discipline Creates the Conditions for Growth
Meaningful progress takes consistent effort. Students learn through repetition, attention, mistakes, and the willingness to begin again.
Our responsibility as instructors is to give that effort a clear direction. Training should have a purpose that students can understand, with appropriate challenges and room for individual development.
We encourage sincere effort while respecting differences in age, experience, and ability. The standard is a commitment to learning; the path must recognise the individual.
Tradition Guides Us; Inquiry Helps Us Improve
Our martial arts foundation connects us to the discipline and spirit of Kyokushin Karate. We honour that inheritance through serious practice and respectful teaching.
We also have a responsibility to examine how we teach. Knowledge of anatomy, exercise, and movement can inform training decisions. Clear explanations help students understand the purpose of an exercise and approach it with greater awareness.
For me, the relationship between tradition, science, and philosophy requires honesty. Tradition provides context and values. Science helps us assess claims and methods. Philosophy asks what our practice is for. Each has a role, and each deserves care.
A Culture Worth Growing
My ambition for Nalin Dojo in Abu Dhabi and Sri Lanka is to build a community where the quality of teaching and the character of our culture grow together.
That means instructors who lead by example, students who feel respected, and families who understand our purpose. It means maintaining clear standards while continuing to listen and improve.
The success of our dojo should be visible in the people who train with us: in their commitment, their conduct, and their willingness to support one another.
Our Commitment
Yoga Martial Arts is our commitment to purposeful training. We want every student to have the opportunity to develop physical skills alongside patience, courage, awareness, and self-control.
A grading, a technique, or a demanding session can mark an important achievement. The deeper work continues in the choices we make afterward.
My hope is that students leave Nalin Dojo better prepared to meet those choices—with a steady mind, a capable body, and respect for the people around them.
